Ursulines of the Chatham Union

We are always ready to approach life from a fresh perspective, to change according to the needs and circumstances of the times.

The newness and freshness of Angela Merici's vision combined a contemplative spirit with active involvement in doing good works.  Breaking with the prevailing convention of the time which limited women's choices to married life or the cloister,  Angela assumed that women could act and live in the world completely on their own authority.   At the heart of her instructions was her injunction that, above all, her followers listen to the inspirations of the Holy Spirit within them and to respond, with wisdom and care, to the signs of the times.

The plaque at the base of Angela's statue in Desenzano, Italy captures the spirit which her followers today still treasure: Foundress of the first non-cloistered order for every kind of service.

It is in this spirit that Ursulines gather in various ways and places as educators, pastoral ministers, social workers, spiritual advisors and volunteers to share our gifts and use our resources to support:

bulletTHE POOR
bulletRefugee work, prison work, advocacy for the homeless, aged, food banks and soup kitchens
bulletSupport of, and membership in, the inter-church coalitions and justice groups that work at the national and international level to bring effective change to global structures
bulletMissionary work in Peru through the Seeds of Hope Project
bulletWOMEN
bulletSupporting and working with women's organizations and shelters
bulletEnabling women to discover and live out of a feminist spirituality by supporting Women's Circles in Canada and Peru
bulletAdvocating women's rights
